MagSafe for iPhone 12: Everything You Need to Know
At the October 13, 2020 “Hi, Speed” event, Apple introduced MagSafe along with the all-new iPhone 12 Series. Touted to be the next big thing for iPhones in terms of opening the gateway for different accessories like cases, chargers, and mounts, it has been getting plenty of traction for all the right reasons.
Are you wondering what is MagSafe for iPhone 12 and how can it make the new iPhones play nicely with a variety of accessories? If the answer is yes, we are here to dispel all of your doubts. Let’s dive right in!
What is MagSafe?
It is worth noting that MagSafe is not a new thing for Apple devices. The Cupertino-based company first introduced MagSafe – the series of the proprietary magnetically attached power connectors for MacBooks – back in 2006.
However, MagSafe for iPhone 12 Series is a little different in terms of functionality. To be more precise, it is a magnetically-attached wireless power transfer accessory-attachment standard.
Notably, Apple calls the MagSafe for the iPhone as the new ecosystem of accessories for easy attachment and faster wireless charging.
How Does MagSafe Work?
MagSafe accessories take advantage of the built-in magnets in the back of iPhone 12 to offer faster charging and a quick-attach experience. To be more precise, it is designed to help the new iPhones get the most out of accessories.
For instance, MagSafe enables the Apple MagSafe charger to deliver peak power delivery for faster wireless charging. Besides, it also allows the Apple leather wallet to magnetically attach to the back of the iPhone. Thus, you can carry multiple wallets without having to install a bulky looking wallet case on your smartphone.
That’s not all, MagSafe can also prove to be quite helpful for accessories like car mounts, docking stations, and car charger mounts as it will help them work more efficiently.

What Sort of Accessories Support MagSafe?
As you may have already guessed, a variety of accessories support MagSafe. From a faster wireless charger to a slim case to a car mount, to a tripod, it has created an ever-evolving ecosystem of accessories.
From an end-user perspective, the MagSafe seems to be a well-timed addition. It has not only enhanced the user-experience but also ushered the smartphone into a new port-free era. Yeah, you got that right!
With Apple showing keen interest in embracing wireless technology, the arrival of a port-free iPhone doesn’t seem too far away. The exclusion of wired earphones and power adapters, at a time when MagSafe is touted to be the next big thing, gives ample indication that Apple wants to go all out for the iPhones that are designed to work with only wireless accessories in the future.
How Fast Can The MagSafe Charger Charge Your iPhone 12?
According to Apple, the MagSafe Charger can charge the iPhone 12 Series with up to 15W of peak power delivery for faster charging. Bear in mind that the actual power delivered to the iPhone will vary based on two important factors –wattage of the power adapter and system conditions.
Notably, the MagSafe Charger can deliver only up to 12W power delivery for iPhone 12 mini. Make sure not to place security badges, credit cards or passports between the MagSafe and the iPhone as it may permanently damage the RFID chips and magnetic strips.
Though MagSafe Charger can also charge the older iPhones like iPhone 11 and XS, the charging speed will be significantly lower.
Will Older iPhones Work with MagSafe Accessories?
MagSafe accessories work in sync with the embedded magnets on the back of the iPhone 12 Series. Though some accessories might also work with older iPhone models, they will not be able to deliver the same experience.
For instance, MagSafe Charger does work with older iPhones that support wireless charging, but it doesn’t charge the older devices with the same charging speed and efficiency. Long story short, MagSafe accessories are locked for iPhone 12 and future iPhone models.
